The Project 'Metaphor in Action'

The project 'Metaphor in Action' is a National Agency Youth in Action Project led by the Romanca Society and funded by the European Union and supported by the British Council.

The Romanca Society is a non- profit and non- governmental organisation established in June 2005 for Romanian people who live and work in London. It has chosen London for the project due to its unique location as a world city, cultural and artistic diversity.

The Training course will take place in West London between 20 and 27 July 2012.

The main goal of the training is for participants to improve creativity, increase knowledge , to learn inter -cultural working methods , to share experiences and to use it for social integration as a tool for educational and non-formal teaching with all age groups in their respective countries. The participants will be from Spain, UK, Latvia, Lithuania, Croatia, Bulgaria,Germany, Romania, France, Palestine and Turkey.

The ICD Young Leaders Forums are international networks of like-minded young individuals with an interest in developing, supporting and sustaining intercultural relations. The first Young Leaders Forum was developed in 2003 and we have since developed and launched a variety of different bilateral and multilateral forums that focus on a diverse range of relationships across the world. Over the past decade the ICD Young Leaders Forum has grown to become one of Europe’s largest independent cultural exchange organizations, hosting programs that facilitate interaction among young individuals of all cultural, academic, and professional backgrounds, from across the world.

The ROlympics, our cultural programme during the Olympic season, is the gift Romania is making to the people of London. Curated and produced by the Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR) and set up in collaboration with numerous Romanian and British partners, it consists of 17 projects in film, theatre, visual arts, and literature that are inspired by the richness of London's identity and that aspire to create a lasting legacy. After a row of theatre, literature, dance and film events earlier on, join us for the second part of ROlympics, when we will unveil eight sculptures & public installations. Hopefully, the weather will clear up and you will have plenty of sunny days to enjoy them in the epicentres of the Olympic London!

19 July - 12 August  Trinity Square Gardens  Cultural Stations A gift of Romania to the people of London, Cultural Stations invite you to experiment a new concept of open-air relaxation that creatively combines cultural history and design. Composed of three modules, the Literary Station, the Scientific Station and the Multicultural Station, the installation responds to London's vibrant identity and to the Olympic values, aiming to create a lasting legacy for Londoners and visitors to the capital.      21 July - 12 August  Victoria Park & London Pleasure Gardens  Nature in the City: Organic Hay Sculptures by Erno Bartha Made of hay enforced with steel frames, Ernö Bartha's sculptures urge the viewer to rediscover the textures and smells of unspoiled nature. The monumental sculptures will adorn the West side lake of Victoria Park, one of the busiest parks in the Olympic boroughs, as well as the London Pleasure Gardens.      22 July, 8pm  Somerset House  Lucian Nagy at the River of Music Festival Virtuoso Lucian Nagy is Romania's choice in the Saxophone Massive section of the ethno and jazz music extravaganza River of Music that will take place on six stages along the Thames, representing the continents competing in the Olympic Games. This project is produced by Serious and is part of the London 2012 Festival.      24 July - 12 August  Victoria Park Live Site  PlayPoint Puzzle PlayPoint Puzzle is a massive interactive puzzle made of rotating parts that create images inspired by the Olympic Games. A meeting place, a playground and a conversation hub, the puzzle is designed by artist Miruna Amza and architect Liviu Zagan. Play with the pieces to reveal the surprising Olympic stories!      25 July, 6pm  Owen's Fields, Islington  Edgerunner: Paul Neagu's First Public Sculpture in London Champagne is uncorked for the first public sculpture by an artist of Romanian origin presented permanently in London. You are warmly invited to the unveiling ceremony of Edgerunner by Paul Neagu (1938 – 2004), which will take place in the presence of HE Dr Ion Jinga, the Ambassador of Romania to the Court of St James's, His Worship The Mayor of Islington, Councillor Jilani Chowdhury, Mr Dorian Branea, Director of the Romanian Cultural Institute in London, Tony Neagu, Serban Cantacuzino, Iolanda Costide – Trustees of the Paul Neagu Estate.   Ongoing Projects          Mon 25 June-Fri 3 Aug  Central Saint Martins  The Algorithms of Beauty: Vlad Tenu at the London Festival of Architecture Award-winning Romanian architect Vlad Tenu exhibits in this year's London Festival of Architecture, a citywide celebration of architectural and design talent in the UK capital. Pensions and youth employment: EESC seeks a delicate balance
On Thursday 12 July, the European Economic and Social Committee adopted two opinions on sensitive topics that are at the heart of the debate across Europe: the future of the pension systems and employment for young people. In both cases, the Committee reached a compromise solution and thus established its position for the future debate on two issues that are so vital to the idea of social Europe. The EESC opinion on the European Commission's White Paper for adequate, safe and sustainable pensions, drafted by rapporteur Petru Dandea (Workers' Group, Romania) together with co-rapporteur Krzysztof Pater (Various' Interests Group, Poland), considers carefully the range of proposals set out in the Commission document on how Member States can reform their pension systems. This is a particularly sensitive issue, and ties in closely with growth and employment policies. The Committee expresses its concern that many countries are responding to the crisis in pension systems by cutting expenditure on pensions and raising the statutory retirement age. In doing so, they are merely postponing the problem to the near future, while cuts in pension benefits are already exposing many pensioners to poverty. That said, the Committee agrees with the Commission's idea of extending working life and feels action is needed to remove the obstacles facing those who want to keep working beyond the legal retirement age. The EESC also deplores the lack of attention given to public pension systems, which need to be strengthened as an important component of the social security net. It recognises the role played by complementary private retirement schemes, provided that they are guaranteed and protected, both against speculation and against the mismanagement of savings. Finally, it recommends that standards on minimum pensions or pension income protection mechanisms be included in future legislation to protect pensioners and avoid major social problems. In the second opinion, drafted by Mr Tomasz Jasiński (Workers' Group, Poland), the EESC welcomes the Commission's Youth Opportunities Initiative and expresses its willingness to play a part in promoting and implementing it.  The Committee notes however that the EU's austerity policy and the lack of a clear and generally recognised growth policy could jeopardise the success of this new proposal, making it vital to put in place an appropriate economic and financial environment. The creation of new, high-quality jobs must remain a priority. The Youth Opportunities initiative - with its focus on young people who are not in employment, education or training - can represent a source of new opportunities but will not create any new jobs without adequate economic and financial support. Hence Mr Jasiński's suggestion that a European Youth Employment Strategy be adopted as part of the 2014-2020 financial perspective in order to ensure the availability of resources for young people under the European Social Fund. Finally the opinion calls on Member States to implement the Youth Guarantee properly, so as to ensure that young people are in a job, education or training within four months of leaving school. Translating Rio+20 into action EESC initiates EU interinstitutional follow-up workshop
The European Economic and Social Committee played a very active role in the run-up to the Rio+20 Conference, and during the conference itself, facilitating broad civil society dialogue and input. EESC president Staffan Nilsson is determined to push implementation of the UN conference results at EU level, and to give civil society a pivotal role in framing the Sustainable Development Goals.   Since Rio, the Economic and Social Committee has wasted no time: a series of follow-up events have been held over the past few weeks, in the conviction that, as Mr Nilsson has often remarked, "the road from Rio is at least as important as the road to Rio". The EESC intends to make Rio+20 the starting point for a new world economic order, based on sustainability.   The Committee recognises the limits of the Rio+20 agreement, but is convinced that the agreed text is a good basis for EU civil society and the institutions to work on practical ways in which our economies and societies can develop sustainably. The first task here is to start to frame the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).   As Mr Nilsson said today at a European Policy Centre event in Brussels: "The EESC is ready to engage and to facilitate meaningful civil society involvement and input in framing the SDGs, just as we did in the run-up to Rio. At the same time, we want all the EU institutions to work together on the Rio+20 follow-up, so I suggest that an interinstitutional brainstorming workshop on the Rio+20 follow-up at EU level be organised in the autumn".   Janez Potočnik, EU Commissioner for Environment, welcomed the idea of a workshop of this kind and stressed at this week's EESC plenary session that "civil society and the private sector will play a fundamental role in delivering green growth and promoting sustainable consumption and production", adding that now is the time "to build on what has been agreed in Rio, and we are looking forward to the EESC's views on how this can best be done".   The EESC will continue to consult on a broad scale and involve civil society stakeholders in the Rio+20 follow-up and in sustainable development issues, through hearings, conferences and via its online platform "Go Sustainable, Be Responsible".   For more information: EESC Rio+20 Online Platform or please contact: Karin Füssl, Head of the Press Unit E-mail: karin.fussl@eesc.europa.eu Tel.: +32 2 546 8722
